Installation
The importance of proper ventilation is highlighted in UK Building Regulations to ensure a safe air flow in businesses across the country and under current legislation, employers in the United Kingdom are required to ensure that all enclosed workplaces are sufficiently ventilated, in order to provide a healthy working environment. AJS offer tailor made installation services, installing units from leading manufacturers which are provided with guarantees and supported by our after sales team who can provide the ongoing maintenance which is a legal requirement: EC Regulation 842/2006.
The installation can be provided for a range of systems – ducted, wall/ceiling mounted and window units. These systems have different advantages and can be used in different applications, our trained and experienced technicians will be able to discuss these options and recommend the most suitable system during the site survey. The unit will vary depending on what is already in place, as well as using the air conditioning calculation to calculate the minimum requirements for the system. Building owners and business managers, whom are operating air conditioning systems have statutory obligations from: Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) to ensure that air conditioning inspections are conducted by qualified and accredited air-conditioning inspectors in a timely manner which is why after an installation has been completed an inspection will be carried out to ensure the system is operating correctly.

Servicing/Maintenance
Regular maintenance and servicing of air conditioning systems is extremely important, it guarantees that a HVAC system is operating safely and at optimum efficiency and The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 (regulation 5) requires employers to keep mechanical ventilation systems in good working order, carrying out regular checks and repairs. This will help to increase the life expectancy of a system and reduce the risk of breakdown. Failure to produce proof of ongoing servicing will in most cases void most manufacturers warranty terms and conditioning. Section 6 of the ventilation from the Governments Health and Safety Executives HSE states: “Mechanical ventilation systems (including air-conditioning systems) should be regularly and adequately cleaned. They should also be properly tested and maintained to ensure they are kept clean and free from anything which may contaminate the air.” This is further cemented by the F Gas Regulations which stipulates that the most common F gases within HVAC systems is tested against leaks at specific intervals. The intervals between these tests vary, this will most commonly depend on the size of the system, what type of refrigerant is in the system and quantity of refrigerant is charged.
Servicing air conditioning increases the lifespan of your system. When you compare the cost of air conditioning maintenance against the cost of a new system, it makes sense to keep things serviced.
You are now legally obligated to have an Air Conditioning inspection as part of the Government EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) these inspections are designed to improve efficiency and reduce the electrical consumption, operating costs and carbon emissions for your system.. When any maintenance is undertaken by the trained technician from AJS both cleaning and testing will take place, checking for leaks, cleaning filters, test on all switches, test the pressure and change condenser coil and making sure that health and safety recommendations and legal requirements are all met. A qualified inspector will arrange to visit site and carry out an indepth inspection of a selected number of systems. Full access will be required to the building in order to inspect the air conditioning correctly. Documentation for the systems will be inspected and where ever possible the inspection will be carried out to suit your business to avoid or keep any disruption to a minimum.
Whilst not all air conditioning systems need to assessed – Only buildings with a total cooling Kw rating of 12Kw and over have to be inspected, eg: 1 x 3.5Kw unit plus 1 x 10Kw unit (13.5Kw). It is still extremely important that employers and building managers fully understand their legal obligations in relation to air conditioning systems, failure to follow any regulations can result in both a fine and prison, as well as the closure of a business premises. Just the failure to produce certification of air conditioning inspection will result in a fixed £300 fine. AJS are able to provide full fire and smoke damper testing for already installed dampers within HVAC systems.
Fire and smoker dampers are an integral part of a HVAC system which prevent the spread of both fire and smoke through the system by shutting the device when an air temperature of 72 °c is reached, or when smoke is detected in the system. To ensure the occupants remain safe within a building and insurance remains valid regular testing and inspections are undertaken – this is a requirement set out by British Standards BS9999:2008 “Arrangements should be made for all fire dampers to be tested by a competent person on completion of installation and at regular intervals not exceeding 2 years, and to be repaired or replaced immediately if found to be faulty. Spring operated fire dampers should be tested annually and fire dampers situated in dust laden and similar atmospheres should be tested much more frequently, at periods to suit the degree of pollution.”
This was further backed by a change in law in October 2006, with the introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 – which now places the responsibility of the maintenance of the fire safety system, this includes fire dampers.
Failure to adhere to these requirements could result to up to 2 years in prison, as well as a £10,000 fine added to this a fire officer if they believe the correct measures are taken to maintain dampers are not taken can close a business. Should a fire break out it will also be difficult to claim on insurance if the correct certification is not presented when requested.
Despite being an essential part in the fire safety precaution in a building, unfortunately unlike other elements such as smoke detectors it is difficult to ascertain whether a fire damper is fit for purpose and will work, unless you have them regularly tested and maintained by a qualified technician.
The duty to comply with the Health & Safety Regulations concerning ventilation system maintenance and cleaning has been in force since January 1st 1996. Now, TR19 and BS EN 15780 have set new standards.
This is why AJS offer this essential fire safety service of a full fire & smoke damper testing and certifications with nationwide coverage. All test are carried out by fully qualified and trained technicians.
Testing will include:
- Identify and locate each fire damper
- Retrofit access doors if any of these are inaccessible
- Carry out fire damper testing, cleaning and drop testing and reset each fire damper
- Provide accurate records of fire damper testing, cleaning and drop testing, including before and after photographs of cleaning
- Identify any problems and recommend remedial action
- Carry out remedial work where required
- Generally tested for Integrity (E), Insulation (I) (if required) and Reduced Leakage (S) (again, if required)
Following on from the inspection a detailed report will be made available, this will include photographic evidence of cleaning and inspection as well an inventory of all dampers tested. This will include location and damper number as well as the dampers results. If there are any failures on dampers an explanation detailing the failures and best course of action to rectify this.

Flat Oval Access Doors.

Flat oval access doors have been designed to be fitted effortlessly onto duct ventilation systems in order to gain a safe way of accessing the ducting space which enables any equipment within the duct to be inspected and maintenance and cleaning to be undertaken regularly ensuring that the duct is in good health and full working order. Oval access doors can be included with a factory fitted chain for added injury prevention. Available in a wide range of sizes and produced in three material options: galvanised steel and 304 or 316 stainless steel.
Tabbed Access Door

Tabbed access doors range have been designed to be fitted on to rectangular duct work fittings, and able to withstand both high and low to medium pressured environments effortlessly. The tabbed access doors are routinely rigorously tested against BSRIA specifications, to ensure maximum safety. Tabbed access doors are available in galvanised steel and 304 & 316 stainless steel. Access doors have been designed to not only add strength to duct work, but also to enable safe access.
Spiral Duct Access Door.

The spiral or circular access doors manufactured by AJS are as standard produced in galvanised steel, however can be finished in both 304 and 316 stainless steel. An additional chain can be added for extra safety whilst removing the door and trying to gain access to the duct system - the chain is fitted to the outer door panel and into the main duct itself. Additional rubber edging can be cut to size and provided to cover rough edges on the duct to lower the risk of injury. Conical springs have been added between the outer and inner panels, to help in installation and inspection of the ductwork.
Blast Gate Dampers

Blast gate dampers which have been manufactured by AJS are designed for extracting fumes, dust, pollen, sawdust, smoke etc in industrial exhaust systems. The blast gate dampers are manufactured in aluminium, and range in size from size from 80mm to 355mm. Easy to operate with an external thumb to lock in both the open and close positions.
Butterfly Back Draught Shutter.

Butterfly back draught shutters are lightweight dual hinged blade dampers which control airflow in venting and ducting. Manufactured in galvanised steel - the blades are set in a circular casing with two blades opposite one another, that can open and close simultaneously/independently which resemble a butterflies wings and are used in circular/spiral ducting ranging from 100mm diameter up to 250mm.
Constant Volume Damper
Constant volume dampers or CVDs are circular self-powered controllers which manage the flow of air within ducting systems, by increasing or decreasing the air volume. With dual blades set into a galvanised steel casing CVDs start with a 100mm diameter and go up to a maximum of 315mm, an external scale can be set effortlessly – without the use of tools, so that the volume of airflow can be regulated.
Curtain Fire Dampers.

The fire dampers manufactured by A J Services are manufactured in the UK and designed to work in ductwork systems which have varying velocities of airflow. The main purpose of fire dampers is to prevent the spread of fire through ductwork systems, which is achieved through a fusible link element, triggered at 72 degrees. Currently there are five different Fire damper models: blades in airstream (rectangular duct), blades out of airstream (rectangular duct), blades out of airstream (spiral/circular duct), induct/internal (rectangular duct) MFD/single blade (spiral/circular duct). These can have factory fitted installations of drywall frame, fire curtain frame, hanging cleats and HEVAC frame.
IRIS Dampers

IRIS volume control/regulating dampers are designed to be used within a circular ducting system and manage its airflow. The galvanised steel element comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 80mm up to 800mm, and is supplied with rubber gasket joining collars. The Iris dampers can also have a motor attached which with a measuring nipple can be fixed to two predetermined levels of airflow.
Multi-Leaf Volume Control Dampers.
AJS manufacture Volume Control Damper, the multi leaf dampers help to regulate the the airflow pressure through both rectangular and spiral/circular ductwork systems. These can be controlled with either an added motor or manual hand control. The Multi leaf has multiple blades which have a maximum rotation of 90 degrees manufactured from aluminium, as is the outer casing. All multi leaf volume control dampers are certified and quality approved pressure tested by BSRIA, the industry's regulatory body.
Non Return Dampers

Non return/back draft dampers are a lightweight multi bladed volume control damper, which has been designed to control the airflow in a ductwork system and ensure no airflow returns against the way it was directed. Made from an aluminium casing, the product also has aluminium blades which measure a thickness of 1.2mm. Suitable to fit on to various duct systems all VCDs come with quality approved testing.
Single/MFD Fire Dampers

MFD dampers are suitable for horizontal or vertical installation with an external shaft handle to give a clear indication of where the blade is positioned, have been designed to stop the spread of fire through ducts – which pass through walls/floors with the use of an electro thermal fuse which is triggered when temperatures reach 72°C degrees. Cowls

Both jet and weather cowls have been designed for external use where the air is being pushed out and exits the ducting or ventilation system. Cowls are extremely durable and manufactured from galvanised steel and are to be used on chimney/roof, this means that cowls are also weather resistant. cowls should be fitted on to flue systems to prevent animals/rain entering the vent system. Produced in various designs depending on needs, both jet and weather cowls diameters range from 100mm to 560mm.
Flex

Flexible ducting is used for the extraction of air from ducting systems within the HVAC Industry. Flex is able to withstand both low and high temperatures ranging from -30ºC to +140ºC. Whilst being manufactured flex is produced in extremely malleable materials which can be bent into shape easily this means it an excellent alternative to rigid ducting where it is not a feasible solution. The flexible ducting offers a fast and effective method of connecting circular and oval ducts and range in dimension from 80mm to 610mm with insulation thickness options of either 25mm or 50mm.

Ducting reducers have two holes (entry/exit) hole of varying sizes the different sized holes mean they are an ideal way of connecting ducting, fans etc which have different size diameters with little effort. The reducers are hard wearing and manufactured in galvanised steel, both the larger and smaller ends on the reducers have male connectors which means this means that connecting the ducting to the reducer is simpler.

Silencers are used in HVAC systems in close proximity to elements which produce continuous loud volumes of sound, they have been designed to have excellent sound absorbing properties - this means that the ventilation system will expel a lower volume of decibels. The attenuator has been produced with a male end, this enables it to be slide into a circular duct with little effort, and diameters range from 100mm to 630mm.

Split Rings

The suspension rings which are supplied by AJS are manufactured from galvanised steel and designed to support ducting. Made from two half circles which have additional flanges, which means the two halves can be bolted to form a full circle that ducting can be passed through and be safe in the knowledge that ventilation components such as flumes and ducting will be held in place securely - providing they are being attached to a solid fixture. The split rings are available in a wide range of diameters from 80mm to 1250mm, which means almost any circular component in a HVAC system will be held in place.

AJS supply suspension rings, a hard wearing and strong circular ring - they allow for fast and effective installation. The support suspension rings have been designed so the can hang both solid or flexible ducting in place, providing it is mounted to a ceiling, wall or solid fixture. Ranging from 80mm to 400mm the suspension rings are provided in all of the most common ducting sizes, the single point rings are manufactured from galvanised steel
Channel brackets and plates

Angled and flat brackets or plates are galavanised steel components which offer a simple solution for building up channel and adding additional support. Each style of bracket or plate are designed to be used in different applications for example 90° brackets are for building frames where as L and T brackets are used for joining two or three pieces of Unistrut together. They can be used with both 41mm x 41mm and 21 x 41mm channels. There are different configurations and sizes to suit your application.

The channel nuts are designed to provide essential gripping power and are used for fixing fittings to channels provided with longer or shorter springs depending on the depth of the channel and suitable for threading of M6, M8, M10, M12 screws.

Diffusers

AJS supply a range of high quality ceiling diffusers that come in a range of shapes and sizes. Diffusers help to distribute both hot and cold air as well as extracting when connected to a HVAC system they are most often found in offices and replace a tile in a suspended ceilings, this is because they have been designed to use in open spaces and require a mounting height of between 2.6m and 4m. Diffusers are available in various different "ways" 1, 2, 3 and 4 as well as swirl and multicone option, the way is an idicator as to how many directions is distributed in.
Grilles & louvres.
AJS supply a large selection of grills and louvres for the supply and extraction of both hot and cold air in HVAC systems. Both the grilles and louvres can be used in either high or low air velocity applications so long as they are attached to the HVAC system via a fixed surface this can include internal and external doors, floors and doors. As they can be used on external walls they are manufactured with weather resistant properties meaning they will last much longer, from aluminium. Grilles have various additional features such as flanges and recessed frames and designed in a variety of styles such as Curved Blade Grilles, Double Deflection Grilles, Eggcrate Deflection Grilles, Flush Mounted Grille, Light Duty Floor Grille and Linear Bar Grille along with many other styles to suite a variety of applications and differing needs
Plenums or Grille Boxes
Providing the simplest and most effective way of connecting components such as grilles and diffuser to spiral/circular ducting with the use of an attached spigot. Grille boxes are manufactured in a variety of styles in order to attach the component to the boxes, this will be the entry and options are made for all of the available sides and combination of sides. There is also options for spigot plenum, this for when a component need to be connected to multiple ducts, these also come with an option for an additional flange.
Supply & Extract Valves

Designed to be mounted to either walls or ceilings supply and extract exhaust valves provide an easy solution for installing and designed for smaller rooms which have a low level of air velocity and an advanced HVAC system would not be needed. Provided in both steel and plastic variations the air valves come in 5 sizes variants with three different options: Air Valve (Exhaust) - Steel, Air Valve (Extract) c/w Spigot - Plastic and Air Valve (Supply) - Steel.
